Emotions play a significant role in our lives. They can be our greatest sources of joy, love, and connection, but they can also be sources of pain, anxiety, and stress. Managing and releasing negative emotions is crucial for our overall well-being. Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) Tapping is the most recent addition to my holistic wellness routine and by tapping on different points I've learned how to release overwhelming, trapped emotions. In this blog post, we'll explore the technique of EFT and how it can help you achieve emotional freedom and inner peace.

The Origin of EFT Tapping

EFT Tapping, often referred to as "psychological acupressure," is a holistic healing approach that integrates elements of ancient Chinese acupressure with contemporary psychology. The underlying premise is that emotional and psychological distress stem from disruptions in the body's energy flow. By tapping on specific meridian points while addressing emotional concerns, EFT aims to restore balance to this energy system and alleviate negative emotions.

How I Use EFT to Calm Emotions 

I like to enjoy a short tapping session at the beginning of my meditation session to quiet my mind and emotions. Whether it's stress, anxiety, or emotional blocks, EFT Tapping helps release overwhelming emotions and trapped trauma and exchanges it for calm and balance.

There’s so much I could say about EFT. I use it whenever my emotions are out of control and I find myself tapping whenever I feel that emotional lump in my throat. It’s the best way I’ve found to immediately relieve emotional overwhelm. The best part is that you can discreetly tap wherever you find yourself struggling with emotions. I’ve stopped to tap in my kitchen when a sad song triggers a memory, or when I find myself crying after getting disappointing news, and I’ve even tapped on the corner of a busy street in the middle of Savannah when I was having a panic attack.

The Tapping Process in Detail

Everyone taps a little differently but here's a brief overview of my tapping method. 

1. First, identify the Issue: Begin by identifying the specific emotional challenge you wish to address. It could be a phobia, trauma, addiction, or any negative emotion that is holding you back. 

2. Setup Statement: Create a setup statement that acknowledges the issue and affirms self-acceptance. For example, "Even though I have this fear of the future, I still deeply love and accept myself." You’re going to say that statement three times while tapping on the side of your hand (make a karate chop pose and tap on the side of your hand in between your pinky and wrist.)

3. Tapping Sequence: Next, use your fingertips to tap gently on specific acupressure points (or meridian points) on your body while talking through your emotions. 

The points I tap through are:
   - Eyebrow
   - Side of the eye
   - Under the eye
   - Under the nose
   - Chin
   - Collarbone
   - Under the arm
   - Top of the head
4. Express Your Feelings: Allow yourself to process these emotions as you go through the sequence. As you tap each point, express your emotions, thoughts, and experiences associated with the issue."I feel ...." "How is this going to work out?" "I don't understand why..."

5. Go through several rounds of tapping, focusing on the issue and any related emotions. Be as specific as possible. Continue tapping until you feel a noticeable shift in intensity or relief. It usually takes me a couple rounds before I feel a shift. 

6. Repeat and Reframe: Continue tapping as you address different aspects of the issue and reframe your thoughts with positive affirmations. I always finish with a tapping round positive affirmations related to the issue, such as, "I am releasing this fear," or "I am on a path to healing." Or “It is safe to release this now.” This process helps you release emotional blockages and create a more positive mindset. End each tapping session with some self-love and journal your experience.
