Be present, keep things simple, and enjoy a stress-free Christmas this year.
Remember the magic of Christmas as a child? The twinkling lights, the warmth of family, and the pure excitement of the season? Somewhere along the way, for many of us, that magic transformed into a whirlwind of stress and exhaustion.
I’ve been there. For years, I poured myself into the pursuit of the "perfect" Christmas—over-the-top gifts, endless baking marathons, elaborate decorating, and striving to recreate the holiday magic I remembered from my youth. Instead of joy, I found myself overwhelmed, disappointed, and disconnected. The Hallmark movie ideals, social media comparisons, and holiday advertising left me focused on achieving perfection rather than simply experiencing the beauty of the season.
But everything changed as years goes by.
After years of chasing the unattainable, I decided I was done. The pandemic taught me the value of simplicity, and I made a bold commitment to create a more intentional and calm holiday season. That year, I shifted my focus to what truly mattered: spending meaningful time with loved ones, finding joy in small moments, and giving myself permission to let go of perfection. I swapped extravagant gift-giving for heartfelt, homemade goodie baskets and released the pressure to host Pinterest-worthy gatherings.
Now, as Christmas approaches, my wish is for all of us to embrace a Calm Christmas—one filled with presence, simplicity, and joy. Here are the five strategies I’ve used to transform my holidays into a season of magic and meaning.
My Top Five Calming Strategies for the Christmas Season
1. Start with Positive Intention
The most transformative part of my self-care journey has been realizing how powerful our minds are. Last year, I approached the holidays with a simple yet profound intention: to be fully present and enjoy every moment.
I watched Christmas movies, baked my favorite treats, and created heartfelt homemade presents. Setting an intention is a promise to yourself to focus on what truly matters. Take a few moments to reflect on what you want for this holiday season and make a commitment to create it.
Pro Tip: Crank up your favorite holiday playlist and let it inspire your intention to embrace the joy of the season.
2. Let Go of Perfection and Reset Expectations
Perfection is the thief of joy, especially during the holidays. Last Thanksgiving, I started with an ambitious plan for a 16-item feast for just four people. Then I paused and asked myself: Is this really necessary?
I trimmed my menu down to the essentials, and guess what? Our meal was just as wonderful. Simplifying allowed me to focus on connection rather than unnecessary stress. Remember, you have the power to decide how much you take on this holiday season. Simplify, reset your expectations, and align your plans with your intention.
Pro Tip: A simple, heartfelt holiday is often the most memorable.
3. Use Meditation to Stay Grounded
Every year, I’d vow not to let holiday stress get the best of me. Yet by mid-December, panic attacks from over-committing would hit hard. It wasn’t until last year that I started practicing meditation to manage stress and stay present.
Meditation doesn’t need to be complicated—sit quietly by your Christmas tree for a few minutes each evening, focus on your breath, and allow yourself to feel calm. Just a few moments of mindfulness each day can make a world of difference.
4. Release Negative Emotions
The holidays can stir up feelings of sadness, grief, or loneliness, and it’s tempting to numb these emotions with food, work, or distractions. Instead, I’ve learned the power of allowing myself to feel and release these emotions.
Techniques like Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) tapping, breathwork, and meditation can help you process and release what you’re feeling. This year, let’s embrace these practices to prevent emotional meltdowns and rediscover peace.

5. Reignite the Magic of Christmas
One of the most magical seasons of my life was during my time as a first and second-grade teacher. Watching my students’ excitement over caroling, crafts, and glitter-filled projects reminded me of the pure joy of the season.
Take a moment to reflect on what brought you joy during Christmas as a child. Whether it’s making crafts, singing carols, or baking cookies, find ways to reconnect with that magic.
